Let this wash over you:

The Klamath River is older than the Klamath Mountains.

This ancient river did not cut its way east to west through an existing mountain range.

The mountains rose up around it and are as young as 5 million years old.

This phenomenon is known as a “water gap,” where a river weaves its way through an entire mountain range.
