The Klamath Mountains 10-part Webinar Series may be the best 69 dollars I’ve ever spent. It has truly been a highlight of 2021 so far. The eager anticipation for Thursday evenings truly excites my entire week. Each presenter has taught me so much about a piece of this planet that I’ve loved for nearly 30 years. These folks are truly the experts in their respective fields of study and their passion for these mountains comes through in every session. The enthusiasm they share is infectious. Alison the host is a wonderful curator of this wealth of information who adds an additional layer to the excellence of the programs.
I had the great honor of working on the Trinity Alps Basin Study known affectionately as TABS back in 2005 and wish I could have had this kind of emersion back then. My trips into the Klamath high country will be seen through a new enhanced intellectual lens. Can’t wait to get back on the trail with my eyes’ and mind’s fresh tune up. If you’d like to fall in love with a mountain range, or if you already love the Klamath Mountains take a look through these expert’s eyes and walk in their footsteps and I assure you the trails of the Klamath high country will be calling you to put some tread on the trail.
Thanks Backcountry Press y’all have crafted a gem. The only thing missing is the birds. Maybe next year.

You know how it’s COVID time and you can’t possibly stomach another minute of Zoom? And you just want to get back outside and in the damn world?
Well. Here is the grand exception.
At my house, we’re making popcorn and cocktails and counting down the minutes until Allison (a marvelous host, btw) unveils the next chapter. The expertise and enthusiasm are the perfect foundation for sharing the wonderland of biodiversity in the Klamath. Great for the layperson, activist, amateur scientist, curious hiker or kayaker. Essential for cultivating the love-of-place that is, in turn, essential for protecting the places we love. If there’s not a Season Two (Indigenous Cultures of the Klamath? Resource Conflicts of the Klamath? Failed Communes of the Klamath?) well, the people are gonna riot. Buy it, binge it, then get out there and defend it!

This series was truly exceptional, on many levels: the caliber of presenters; the professionalism of the presentations; the depth and breadth of content presented in way that was engaging to a lay audience as well as those with experience; and the creating of a comfortable space that made me look forward to the weekly presentation. It also served to demonstrate the power and possibilities of connecting online, a space that can often feel impersonal.

This 10-part series is such a treasure for amateur naturalists and lovers of the Klamath-Siskiyou. I’m on the BOD of Siskiyou Field Institute (Selma, OR), and I can foresee us using this package for a variety of our courses and events.

I love hearing directly from all your enthusiastic scientists and explorers.

This webinar series has been a serious boost to my morale in these Covid times. While my backpacking days are behind me, I’m still a naturalist at heart and enjoy constantly learning new things about the world around us. This series has been very enlightening, and as a former scientist myself it’s always special to see other scientists/subject experts get excited when they describe something new they have discovered.
Probably the biggest boon for me from the series has been to make me look much closer at the environment I’m in when hiking locally in Humboldt County. “WTH is THAT?” and “How did THAT happen?” questions are popping into my head more often when I’m outside.
    And that keeps me alive…
Kudos to Allison and Michael for pulling this off! I can’t wait for the book.

This webinar series was the perfect way for my partner and I to have something to look forward to each week during this long pandemic winter. All the presenters were knowledgeable, passionate, and engaging and Alison and Michael were excellent facilitators. As a college student, I learned so much from each of these presentations.

This has been a fantastic series; I’m sorry that it’s finished, and happy that it sounds like its success will lead Backcountry Press to organize further presentations. I’m really looking forward to getting the book and being able to revisit the topics in more depth. Thank you!

Not just a series of videos with information on the Klamath area. The webinar also gives the viewer a sense of community with other folks living in the area. A good series to use as for planning a trip.

Looking forward to the book. Hope we see more of these programs. I am in McCloud so would like to see a program on Lassen, Medicine Lake and Shasta.

I’m so pleased that this series was created as a pre-cursor for the upcoming book by Backcountry press on the Klamath Region! Of course, I’m biased, having worked in the region, and still live here, but it is truly deserving of all the attention. The series was thoughtful, well presented and researched by all the specialists, colorful, informative, and free of technical difficulties for the most part. I agree with one of the other reviewers: where were the birds? But hey, you can’t do everything. Loved every minute of the series, I watched them all live, and enjoyed the audience participation through chat. Well done Allison and Michael!

I just happened to stumble upon Backcountry Press on Facebook. I had been planning a trip to the Klamath Mountains area, so seeing that they were offering this series was perfect. The 10 weeks flew by; the series has been fantastic. I was impressed by every detail of the presentations, from the introductions by Allison (with suggested pairings) to the depth of knowledge of each specialist. I’m even more excited for my trip this summer.
I’m also taking the botanical tales of the PCT series, which is also excellent.
Thanks Allison and Michael for organizing these.

Very much liked Allison as the host(ess) – engaging, aware, just right with easy but also ‘on it’.
But the content was excellent: Tim and his rivers talk as perhaps the best, but all of them left me wanting more; i could sit and listen to anyone for hours, that is to say they were all superb in their knowledge AND presentations.
Suggestion: Bruce Baldwin could talk about evolution of the flora with the same ease and profound expertise that characterizes your presenters.
Also, I liked your constant reminders of the ‘First Peoples’ of the area; a little more of that would be very welcome. And, even before the influence of humans (speculation of what the Klamaths would be like without any human disturbance would be fantastic tho a tad delicate).

I will miss my weekly on-line “hit” of the Klamath Mountains. Thank you Allison and Michael for putting together such an excellent and professional natural history series on a very special and unique place. And Allison, you were a great host. Really appreciated your cheerful presence and informative introductions to each of the speakers as well as expertly guiding the question and answer sessions. Especially appreciated the sessions on the Plant Communities, Forest Pests, Geology and Rivers of the Klamath Mountains….but really every session passed along a wealth of fascinating information. Would love to see future talks on both the History of Indigenous Peoples in the Klamath’s (they faithfully and respectfully stewarded this land for thousands of years before the arrival of the European white settler), as well as Birds of the Klamath. Again, thanks to both the organizers and presenters for all their efforts to make this a successful series. Looking forward to publication of the book!

This series has been full of inspiring naturalists, and fascinating facts about this unique area. From geological time to climate change impacts, my scope of understanding has grown broader and deeper with each lesson. I look across the landscape with new eyes, more tuned-in to the health of individual species and the way all the strands of nature’s web support each other. Thank you for creating this opportunity to engage with so many local experts and for offering scholarships to those of us working in environmental education. It has been valuable and stimulating in these times of stagnation. Looking forward to sharing what I’ve learned with the local youth of the Klamath Region!

Each week I felt as though I was invited on a nature walk into the Klamath Mountains with some of the regions most informed and passionate experts. I walked away from each session with not only new information but with my curiosity ignited. Can’t wait to get my hands on the book!

I greatly enjoyed each of the sessions. They were very personal as each presenter shared themselves and their expertise and knowledge of the Klamath Mountains. It was the personal emotions and love of the region that made these webinars outstanding. Good educators share their passion and enthusiasm in their presentations and “trick” everyone into wanting to learn so much more. The sessions gave me many new insights into the natural history of the area and deepened my appreciation for the region and the people who have a love of it. It is truly nice to know that there are so many others who feel such a special bond with the lakes, streams, plants, rocks and animals. I look forward to walking these mountains again with better educated eyes that are seeking and seeing so much more.

What a great way to spend 10 evenings listening to different speakers expound on their expertises in different areas of natural history. I can’t wait for the book as it should go deeper in each chapter. Allison was a wonderful hostess to tie it all together. A real bright spot in a crazy year.

I have had a 44 year love affair with the Klamath Mountains since my first backpacking trip into the Marbles in 1977. I have done about 100 trips since, all over the Klamath Mountains. Until this series, my knowledge has been mostly experience related, blissful, and visceral, although I did read The Klamath Knot many years ago. This heady piece of work has been the icing on the cake for me. My head is filled to the brim with amazing facts and information. Well done. I look forward to the book.

Nuggets of knowledge we soaked up from @sheriff_wo Nuggets of knowledge we soaked up from @sheriff_woody_pct on the Botany Road Trip to the Intermountain West:

1. Rare plants tend to grow in clusters with other rare plants.

2. When choosing to except a hitch or not, feel more comfortable if a couple is offering the ride. Couples, generally, don’t murder people.

3. If it looks onionish but doesn’t smell a onionish, don’t eat it. It may kill you.

4. Studying satellite imagery for interesting soil types and rocky outcrops is a great way to hunt for rare plant locations.

5. Look more closely at the tiny plants you step over.

6. Penstemon is the most diverse genus that is endemic to North America!

Part 2 of our 3 part journey featured 12 of them, including this gorgeous King’s Beardtongue (Penstemon kingii) from Utah.

This evening Part 3 takes us to the southeast to meet, among others things, loads of carnivorous plants. Sundews, flytraps, and pitcher plants — oh my!
