Is Professor Emeritus and Research Geologist Emeritus in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at UC Davis. His research specialty is the mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry of metamorphic rocks, especially the metavolcanic rocks found in active geothermal systems on land (in Iceland, Mexico, Hawaii, and California), at oceanic spreading centers (in the northeast Pacific), as well as in the fossil hydrothermal systems found in ophiolite complexes (in California, Cyprus, and Oman). After receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1978, he spent two years at NASA’s Johnson Space Center on a National Research Council post-doctoral fellowship, then spent three years at UC Riverside before joining the Davis faculty in 1983.
