Description

Conifers of the Pacific Slope is a contemporary field guide built to assist plant lovers in identifying one of the most intriguing and ancient groups of plants in the world. Conifers survive within the West’s most spectacular environments—from the coastal temperate rainforests to the highest mountain summits.

Educator, plant explorer, and author Michael Kauffmann introduces readers to the magic of the Pacific Slope’s conifers through:

  • Color plates for identifying 65 species
  • Accurate and updated collection of range maps for all conifer along the Pacific Slope
  • Destinations for finding conifers in the field
  • Tantalizing photos from across the West
  • All conifer species found in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, southern British Columbia and northern Baja California

“Western North America includes the tallest, largest, and oldest trees in the world. These trees inspire visitors from around the world with their beauty and majesty, but not until now has a single, concise volume appeared that identifies these trees and describes their distribution. “Conifers of the Pacific Slope” is a valuable companion to anyone exploring the forests and woodlands of this vast region.” —Christopher Earle, author of The Gymnosperm Database

“A well-illustrated, information-rich, comprehensive, and yet compact and user-friendly identification guide.”
—Stephen F. Arno author of Discovering Sierra Trees, Northwest Trees, and Timberline: Arctic and Alpine Forest Frontiers

  1. Rated 5 out of 5

This book is exactly what I was looking for! Great detail photos of cones, seeds, bark, and needles. The maps are super useful, as are the concise descriptions. This is a perfect little guide to help identify all the conifers in the PNW.

  2. Rated 5 out of 5

I already had, and had often consulted, the first edition of this book. But I didn’t hesitate to get the new edition, because I know that Backcountry, in recent years, has upped their game, producing field guides that are even more beautiful, even more sturdy, with even more clear text – in short, even more useful. It’s really quite amazing that such a small publisher – basically a husband and wife team – has created what I think is the gold standard in nature guides for the geographies that they cover.

  3. Rated 5 out of 5

I have just started using this book and greatly enjoy the pictures, maps and descriptions of so many different conifers within walking distance of where I live.

  4. Rated 5 out of 5

I bought this book by accident while ordering another book. I love it and it was the book I didn’t know I needed. I have spent hours reading it and it’s on my nightstand for some daily contact.
