Weren’t his Botanical Tales of the PCT through the SoCal mountains and desert a joy to see and listen to?!

I totally appreciate how much HE APPRECIATES plants... like this rare white pygmy poppy (Canbya candida) that grows right along the Pacific Crest Trail.
.
ITS ONLY 3cm TALL!
.
Matt introduced us to 148 plant species you’ll meet in this southernmost section of the PCT.
.
He also shared favorite camp spots, trail angel highlights, tips & tricks for successful trips, and answered loads of questions about how he combines his obsessions of botany, photography, and long-distance hiking.
.
Super entertaining and super affordable.

Officially stoked for our “Rivers of the Klamath Officially stoked for our “Rivers of the Klamath Mountains” webinar this week!
.
AND stoked x2 to have Tim Palmer as our presenter!
.
Tim has a deep love for rivers, especially having paddled more than 300 of them across North America. He’s the author of 30 books, photographer extraordinaire, and a dynamic public speaker.
.
Here’s a sneak peek at his tour of the Klamath Region’s rivers:
.
1. Rogue River, Rainie Falls
2. Patrick Creek just before joining the Smith River
3. Smith River
4. Trinity River, top of Burnt Ranch Gorge
5. Chetco River
6. Salmon River at Moorehouse Creek
7. Klamath River
.
Water in the Klamath Mountains creates a network of streams and rivers of extraordinary importance and natural wealth unlike any other in America.
.
From the #rogueriver in the north to the #trinityriver in the south, this suite of waterways is one of the premier assemblages of relatively underdeveloped rivers nationwide.

🌿Botanical Tales of the Pacific Crest Trail 🏔
.
After two 2,650 mile thru-hikes botanizing the Pacific Crest Trail, Matt Berger @sheriff_woody_pct shares both the extraordinary and everyday plants along each region of the trail in this 5-part webinar.
.
Five Tuesdays 7pm PT, 2/16-3/16.
All sessions will be recorded.
Pre-registration required.
.
This series of presentations will take us on an armchair journey from south to north and highlight the rich biodiversity of plants along the way while weaving in stories from the trail — hitchhiking adventures, animal encounters, epic trail magic, and more.
.
The five presentations will each focus on a different region of the trail:
.
1. Southern California Mountains and Desert (2/16)
.
2. The Sierra Nevada of central California (2/23)
.
3. The Cascades and Klamath Mountains of northern California (3/2)
.
4. Oregon’s Cascades (3/9)
.
5. Washington’s Cascades (3/16)
.
In addition to hiking about 30 miles a day, Matt spent time documenting all the plants and uploading them to Calflora and iNaturalist for scientists to be able to use the data in studies and range maps. He will share how this process works so others can contribute to this data set.
.
These webinars are being offered on a sliding scale with 50% of funds contributed supporting Matt’s botanical explorations, and 50% supporting our partners.

How much rain can actually fall in one spot in a d How much rain can actually fall in one spot in a day? A month? A year?
.
For the month of December 1981, @michael_of_mountain recorded 81.90” of rain at Camp 6 Lookout in the Klamath Mountains, 5 air miles ESE of Gasquet—still a record for California. (Check out his original data collection sheet!)
.
In a 3 day stretch in January 1982, in another nearby rain gauge, 45” were recorded, including a whopping 23” in 24 hours! The @nws deemed this the “Mother of All Storms.” #gullywasher
.
For the entire weather year 254.9” of rain was recorded at Camp 6, a continental US record that still stands.
.
All these records are, more than likely, safe for our lifetime.
.
So how is it that just down the hill, 3,200’ lower and 5 miles to the WNW, Gasquet reported a MERE 145” for the year? 110” less rain?!?
.
This is thanks to the orographic effect—an important phenomenon in the Klamath Mountains and a story that Rosemary Sherriff will tell in her “Climate of the Klamath Mountains” webinar on Thursday 1/28.

Field Guide to Manzanitas

By Michael Kauffmann, Michael Vasey and Tom Parker

Manzanita’s center of biodiversity is in the California Floristic Province, where they are the “rock stars” of woody shrub diversity. Ranging from the Sierra Nevada mountains to coastal bluffs along the Pacific, from temperate rainforests along the North Coast to arid mountain slopes in Southern California, a wealth of manzanita species and subspecies can be […]
