Hike 12: Six-hour Horse Trail Loop

DSCN4355

The McArthur Creek route utilizes trails better known for equestrian use; hikers are rare here. Despite its length, it’s a remarkably easy hike, with only a few noticeable climbs, the hardest coming right near the start. It passes alternately through old-growth redwood forest and young second-growth mostly dominated by alder. It can get pretty soupy in places during the rainy season. Most of the trail junctions are numbered and loops are named by the estimated time it takes to ride them.

There’s a restroom on a short spur trail to the right at mile 10.1, not shown on the map.
