Johnson Trail Camp highlights the higher portions of Rockefeller Forest. The route is entirely in forest, mostly old growth, so it’s shady but also viewless. The trees on the slopes are smaller and more diverse than on the flats. The ascent is extremely gentle, culminating just before the campground, which has some historic buildings. The descent, on a fire road, is very steep in places.
