The Dan East Trail is not especially long, it the steepest in the book and provides quite a workout. It serves as a shortcut between Pilot Ridge and South Fork Mountain and cuts straight across the Pilot Creek valley. There’s very little of it when you’re not either running downhill or fighting your way back up again. Still, it’s relatively accessible, easy to follow, and quite secluded most of the time (it’s occasionally used by motorcyclists). Most of it is in dense fir forest, but there are a few prairies with nice views to enjoy while you catch your breath.
