Hike 50: Bug Creek & Mad River Buttes

Board Camp Mountain
Board Camp Mountain

Bug Creek & Mad River Buttes is a challenging hike that can be made considerably less so by skipping the loop to the south. It includes some steep, slippery slopes; poorly-defined trails; and stream fords. The rewards are jaw-dropping views in every direction, interesting rock formations, and miles of seldom-visited forest and prairie. The spur trails at the west end go to vantage points; if you’re going to leave one out, make it the northern one, even though it’s easier to get to.

As of summer 2019, all trails east of the westerly junction with the loop to the south (the Wallace Camp-Fork Camp Trail) have clear, easy to follow routes, and are in passable condition. Parts of the trail west from there to the lookout points are probably very brushy. Wallace Camp-Fork Camp Trail, forming the loop dropping far downhill and climbing right back up again, is challenging, but the glade along the creek at the bottom of the loop is a delightful spot to visit.
