What’s your plan for rights-managed agreements with the photographers? And what’s a “hiking guide” = a book?

Hi Mark – Thanks for your interest in this project. Yes, this will be a book for families to get out in Humboldt. Typically we offer copies of the book once printed for a certain number of photos contributed. We are happy to chat more. Cheers, Michael

Thanks. Still wondering what is your rights-managed plan and agreement for use of the photo(s) with the photographers? In other words, what uses of the photo is a photographer agreeing to give for free to you (all uses in any medium or purpose, one-time use for this guide book, etc.?

Got it, yes we have a bit of language we like to use:
β€’ The licensor remains the sole owner of the images copyright. No transfer of intellectual property is made by this agreement.
β€’ Backcountry Press agrees to credit the licensor in a reasonable manner whenever the images is printed or displayed.

Thanks for clarity about copyright. But your response doesn’t clarify actual usage rights for photos submitted. Do you intend to claim any possible use of the photo that a photographer is agreeing to give for free to you (all uses in any medium or purpose, OR, just one-time use for this guide book, etc.? Can’t see submitting a photo for your use and giving up rights for any foreseeable future use.

One time use in a book for kids and families sponsored by a local non-profit. They have funding to give the book away free to families.

Great news. It’d be good and necessary to have that language about one-time use and copyright posted on your site to encourage submissions.
