With some Frasera speciosa plants ranging to 5’ tall, it is impossible to miss—even by the most distracted backpacker or day hiker.

We’re highlighting another gorgeous species in the new “Wildflowers of California’s Klamath Mountains” — which is due in hand on Monday! This is just one of 629 species, subspecies, and varieties featured in this 2nd (& expanded) edition of “Wildflowers of the Trinity Alps.”

Here’s how to recognize it from author Ken DeCamp:

“Thick flowering stalks rise out of masses of large whorled elliptic leaves that are pointed at the tips.

More leaves occur in whorls along the stalk growing smaller as they progress upwards.

Masses of beautiful flowers bloom between the leaf whorls and open progressively from the bottom to the top.

Petals are yellowish-green, fading to white at the center, dotted with deep purple with sharply folded and pointed tips.

Petal margins are silvery or light purple.

Each petal has two purple and hairy looking nectary pits with long, white deeply divided scales extending outward from the base of the ovary to cover them.

Stamens are prominent, stout, upright, and tapered with large yellow to orange anthers.

The dozens of plants I found were popular with ants foraging in the nectary pits. Monument plants are monocarpic, meaning that they grow for several years before they flower. After flowering and setting seeds they die. In any area where they grow you can find a mix of dead stalks, flowering plants, and others in various stages of growth.

They were quite common in Big and Back Meadows as well as the meadows surrounding the Wright Lakes in the Marble Mountains. I photographed these in late July.”
